Our Chief Impact Officer, Charles Bedford, also teaches climate finance, energy transition and environmental markets to graduate students at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. HKUST is one of Asia’s top universities, drawing from the best of the best of the AP region’s schools and universities. Invariably, students in his classes dive deeper into topics of interest and bring back surprising updates and unique insights, given their keen minds. This semester one group explored the current state of the Chinese carbon market, which is the world’s largest by volume and soon will become the largest by value. The Chinese government has placed a great emphasis on this Emission Trading Scheme to drive down emissions and meet its Paris Agreement Nationally Determined Contribution. The government has also put in place a mechanism to allow polluters to satisfy 5% of their annual compliance obligation with projects that sequester carbon or avoid emissions. The team of DONG Siyi, LI Xin, XIAO Zhuoyi and YAN Zitong provided the attached presentation to update the rest of the class on this innovative carbon finance mechanism, it’s history and likely future.
